How It Works

How the GenkoYoshi System Works

Japanese writing becomes easier when the practice space grows with you.

GenkoYoshi is a progressive 8-step notebook system designed to guide learners from their first hiragana and katakana practice to confident, authentic Japanese writing. Rather than using the same grid at every level, each step changes the writing space, structure, and level of guidance as your skills develop.

Start Where You Are

You do not need to begin at Step 1 if you already write kana or kanji comfortably.

Choose the step that feels appropriately challenging now, then move forward when the layout begins to feel easy and natural.

Eight Steps of Progress

Steps 1–2: Build the Basics
Large, spacious grids help beginners practice hiragana, katakana, stroke order, balance, and character placement without feeling cramped.

Steps 3–5: Develop Control
The grids gradually become smaller and denser, giving you more room for kanji practice, vocabulary work, short sentences, and increasingly fluent handwriting.

Steps 6–8: Write More Authentically
Advanced layouts move beyond basic square-grid practice and introduce more traditional vertical-writing formats for essays, speeches, formal compositions, and serious study.

Choose Your Layout

Each step is available in two writing styles:

Option A - Guided Grid
Includes dashed center guidelines to help you place characters evenly and build balanced handwriting habits.

Option B - Clean Grid
Uses simple manuscript-paper squares or columns without center guidelines, for learners who are ready to rely on developing muscle memory.

Choose Your Grid Color

Every notebook is available with a choice of grid color:

Classic Black
Clear, familiar, and traditional.

Calming Blue
A softer visual option for longer writing sessions.

Memory-Retaining Red
Strong contrast for focused practice and easy visual guidance.

Progress at Your Own Pace

There is no deadline, no test, and no “correct” speed.

Write a few characters each day, fill a page after class, practice before an exam, or use the notebooks for regular journaling and composition work. The system is designed to support steady progress one page, one character, one step at a time.
